Know Thy Enemy! Breitbart on Women in Science and Maths

Enter Breitbart. The headline reads ‘Here’s Why There Ought to Be a Cap on Women Studying Science and Maths.’ Just to pause there for a second, a ‘cap’ on women studying science and maths? This is an article in Breitbart, which is one of the heartland right wing platforms in the US and with a UK tab on the mast head. Scary stuff.

The more you read the more you start to realise that these guys are the kind of media we hear about and need to watch closely. As they say, know they enemy.

First of all notice the picture they used to sell their story on the site. Who is this? The girl who’s a nerd? The book worm? Who knows.

Now read on… ‘Women drop out of science and maths in alarming numbers, not because there are sinister and mysterious patriarchal forces at play, but because they either can’t cut it in highly competitive environments or they simply change their minds about what they want from life’ they open the article with as if it’s a fact from a research or education body.

But no… here’s the the kicker, the story comes from a journalist who suggests that a well known person ‘appeared to suggest this’ … Here’s the text ‘If you don’t believe me, listen to feminist academic Dr Emily Grossman, who last week appeared to suggest, in support of controversial comments made by Nobel laureate Tim Hunt, that women need special treatment because they’re fragile, delicate wallflowers who cry a lot. Her argument, not mine!’ No she didn’t, see the piece at the end of this story.

This all came about because Professor Tim Hunt said that women scientists shouldn’t work with men because ‘the problem with girls is that you fall in love with them and they cry when you criticise them!’ Oh he admits to being a chauvinist pig, according to Sky News.

So Sky News put on TV a Brietbart editor (to jazz things up) and Dr Grossman (to be jazzed up). After the piece aired Milo dropped his story on Breitbart.
