It was probably the most entertaining 1-1 draw seen at Old Trafford this season. United may have stalled again but there was enough talking points from this one game than we have had all season.
But the story wasn’t as it usually is where United dominate and the opposition rely on lady luck. If anything, this was simple – United created a few chances, but didn’t have the quality to finish them. Bournemouth turned up and gave United a right fright. Literally.
Tyrone Mings turned up to Old Trafford in David Haye style of mood. He was not messing about. Even if he lost a leg, Tyrone was not leaving Old Trafford without a fight. And he got one hell of a fight with the beast that is Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
From the very first minute, Zlatan and Tyrone were at it. Tyrone gave him a few quick kicks and Zlatan was giving it back. In fact, Zlatan almost looked surprised at how a 23 year old did not seem fazed to be giving the great Swede a hard time. To be fair, both players seemed to be enjoying the battle.
However, there is no room for such behaviour on a football pitch. Especially, when you consider the world wide impact these professionals have on children and adults around the world.
IF, for one second, the FA allow Mings’ stamp or Zlatan’s elbow go free without judgement, the game has taken a dark turn down the roads of Mike Tyson boxing. Both players should be charged for bringing the game into disrepute. It is not acceptable to be even close to stamping another professional on a football pitch. As they say, all is fair in love and warfare but even that has a line.
Zlatan crossed the line. Although Mings’ stamp may get all the attention, there is no denying Zlatan had a nibble first. Reviewing the footage, you can see Zlatan aiming a stamp towards Mings just before Mings actually connects and lands one back on him.
Prior to that, Zlatan had been wrestling Mings ¾ of the way down the pitch prior to even kicking the ball.
Then comes the elbow. Shocking. It is embarrassing that a footballer of his maturity and experience would leave himself so open easily. All footballers know there are 20-odd cameras in a match nowadays. How he thought he would get away with that? I have no idea.
All that aside, it took the light away off a very good football match. Even though it may have been the same old story for Man United, Bournemouth came to Old Trafford with fight and determination and could have imposed themselves better on the game.
It’s a shame the game will be highlighted for behavioural antics. But, in some ways, Jose Mourinho may prefer that as it takes the limelight off another tenth home draw for United this season.
Some will say it was good to see “old-fashioned” football. Others, like myself, will want to remind those in privileged jobs – The world is watching you and Ibra’s lunatic behaviour has to be stopped some way or another.
