Football: Battle for the Golden Boot

The Premier League is blessed with some of the best finishers in the world this season but who’s going to win the precious Golden Boot?

Harry Kane

 There’s only one man to start with and that’s Harry. The Spurs striker topped the charts for the highest scorer last season with 29, four ahead of Romelu Lukaku and has started this campaign in impressive form.

The England striker has scored his first Champions League hat trick and looks unplayable at the moment. It’s going to be hard to stop him from winning a second straight Golden Boot with expert service from the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

A move to Real Madrid has already been mentioned but I get the feeling he’s going to be a one-club man and if there’s anyone who can beat the all-time goals record set by Alan Shearer, it’s Harry Kane.

Sergio Aguero

It’s funny to recall that some fans thought Aguero was finished towards the end of last season and about to be replaced by Gabriel Jesus but Pep Guardiola has managed to get the two working together.

So far this season the Argentine looks arguably more determined and more complete as a player than ever before and his manager believes we’re seeing a new Aguero.

Since arriving in the Premier League the ex-Atletico Madrid forward has scored more goals than any other player and I get the feeling that if there’s anyone who will stop Kane it’s going to be the Manchester City striker. If City wins the league, I’d back him to top the chart but either way he’ll score more than 20 goals.

Romelu Lukaku

The second he signed for Manchester United you knew he would score goals with the number of top quality passers around him.

The one doubt in everyone’s mind has been whether he could produce in big games. His supporters point out that most games in the League are not against a big club, so as long as he bullies the weaker teams he has every chance of topping the goal-scoring chart.

The one big problem the big Belgian might have is the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as there’s no way the Swedish striker is going to be happy sitting on the bench. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top if they do end up battling for the first team spot.

Alvaro Morata

Strangely enough Morata isn’t known for scoring goals. He’s more recognised for his tenacious style of play, his ability to press and his general hunger for the game.

The fact remains that the Spain international is a striker so his main job is to hit the back of the net and Antonio Conte seems to have told him that he’s a lone striker for that exact reason.

Morata has previously complained that his managers have shown little faith in his goal-scoring potential but Conte shows no sign of falling into that trap and the Spanish forward has slotted perfectly into the one-man up front role vacated by Diego Costa. The ex-Real Madrid striker might struggle to keep up with the top scorers but I’d venture that when you combine goals and assists he will outdo both Aguero and Lukaku.

Mo Salah

In every predictions list you have to have a long shot who could shock everyone and mine is Salah. Liverpool has been in desperate need of a striker since the departure of Luis Suarez and the Reds have struggled again this season to score consistently, with the exception of the ex-Chelsea winger.

He seems to have settled into life in Liverpool pretty smoothly and Jurgen Klopp’s side will need him to keep producing with several forwards misfiring. Salah has had more shots on goal this season than any other player except Lukaku, which makes me think he will continue to get chances and therefore he’s my 200/1-type bet to win the Golden Boot.
