Louis Vuitton’s relationship with the skating brand has been tempestuous, with LV suing Supreme in 2000 for a mock skateboard deck that had been wrapped in Louis Vuitton’s famous monogram.
They are unlikely bedfellows but Louis Vuitton and Supreme have collaborated on a mega collection that has dazzled both the city hipster and fashion worlds. The collaboration produced an eclectic mix of fashion, home wares, a pocketknife and even a $480 bottle opener on a wallet chain, all plastered with the iconic Supreme and Louis Vuitton insignia.
Fast forward 17 years and together they have created a mega collection causing thousands to queue around the world at pop-up stores created to sell the collaboration for a limited time. Decorated with a striking red carpet detailed with the LV and Supreme logos, the pop-ups were in 12 locations around the world including London, New York, Tokyo and Seoul.
Louis Vuitton’s world of luxury adds a touch of elegance to the cool and laid back nature of Supreme. While the skate brand’s style shows through the collection in the form of denim and camo jackets, faux-fur lined hooded coat, sweaters and dungarees, Vuitton’s traditional luxury shines through in well-tailored long-line jackets, delicate slides, neckerchiefs and well-crafted bags, purses, wallets and varying sized storage trunks.
This collaboration was never going to be a cheap affair but both the sale price and resale price on sites like eBay are astronomical. Home wares featured in the collection such as the storage trunk and skateboard trunk retailed at just below £45,000 and just over £36,000 respectively.
The vivid red motif cushion retailed at just over £400. The price of the clothing is no different. The most sought after item is the classic Supreme box T-shirt retailing for £348 but one of the most expensive clothing items was the fur-trim hooded parka which was on sale for more than £2,800.
The Denim jeans retailed above £600 and the sweatshirt was over £500. The pyjama-style bottoms retailed at more than £1,000 a pair.
The shoes and accessories were also not exactly cheap, with belts, trainers, gloves and scarves all selling for more than £400.
The resale price of the collaboration has seen some products sell for 10 times their original retail prices. The red box hoodie went on sale for just over £670 but has been listed on eBay for £6,000. Similarly the red hold-all retailed for around £2,400 and is being resold online for as much as £9,000.
Such is the growing popularity of Supreme that celebrities the world over have already been photographed in the collection. The usual streetwear suspects such as Justin Bieber, Drake and 2 Chainz were quick to be seen in the Supreme X Louis Vuitton jackets but even unlikely celebrity fans such as Madonna, Celine Dion and Victoria Beckham have been photographed wearing various pieces.
While Louis Vuitton have decided not to open pop-up stores in the future, surely the popularity of this mammoth collection can only inspire more collaborations between high-class luxury and streetwear cool.
