Football: England’s 5 best upcoming players

England has consistently failed to turn players with a vast amount of talent into world-class performers with the possible exception of Wayne Rooney. The next generation of English footballers includes some exciting talents but who are the top five who will really steal the limelight?

Marcus Rashford

englandAlthough Rashford dips in and out of the England first team, he’s nowhere near the finished article comparised to the likes of Kylian Mbappe or Ousmane Dembele. The Manchester United forward burst onto the scene after scoring a stack of goals in his first 10 appearances for his club. The speedy striker has spent most of this season playing off the left side of attack but if he is to become one of the world’s best he needs to return to playing through the middle. Most young English players tend to struggle when the pressure is on but the 19-year-old seems to relish having all eyes on him.

Chances of becoming a future star? 8/10.

Harry Winks

englandWinks seems to have been around for an age having signed his first pro contract with Spurs nearly four years ago but the midfielder has only played 26 times since then. Despite his lack of game time, the 21-year-old looks to be winning the trust of manager Mauricio Pochettino and with his recent England call-up it appears as though he might finally be ready to make the step up. The pass-master is similar to Paul Scholes in his size and playing style but lacks the ability to get forward and score goals, something the ex-Manchester United man was superb at.

Chances of becoming a future star? 5/10.

Dele Alli

englandIt’s tough naming Alli on this list when everyone thinks he’s already a full-blown star but the truth is that he’s only played one full campaign to his maximum capacity and has not yet had a huge impact in England colours. His rise to stardom came after an astonishing second season in the Premier League in which the midfielder broke several records set by the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. The 21-year-old’s demeanor on the pitch, the way he carries himself and the profile that comes with being one of adidas’s main poster boys suggest he’s already the real deal but there’s plenty of work left to do.

Chances of becoming a future star? 9/10.

Joe Gomez

englandBeing a top quality defender is almost impossible in the Premier League nowadays given the number of world-class strikers on the scene but Gomez has looked impressive since signing for Liverpool. The ex-Charlton defender can play anywhere along the back line and is the Premier League’s second-fastest player over 100 metres, after fellow defender Kyle Walker at Manchester City. Jurgen Klopp has shown a vast amount of faith in Gomez already this season and if there was ever going to be a chance to shine it would be right now, playing for a club that desperately needs a leader at the back.

Chances of becoming a future star? 6/10.

Freddie Woodman

englandWoodman is probably the least-known player on this list having struggled to break into Newcastle United’s first team, however the England international already has a World Cup trophy under his belt, winning the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper at this year’s Under-20s World Cup. He saved a penalty in the final, allowing England to beat Venezuela 1-0. I’m surprised he has not yet featured for Rafa Benitez’s side but the young keeper has got a solid future if he can get regular playing time.

Chances of becoming a future star? 7/10.
