Food: London’s Best Street Food

From Camden to Canonbury and doughnuts to dumplings, London has one of the most diverse and delicious street food scenes in the world. Stalls, trucks, sheds and pop-up restaurants can be found all over the city and often with pretty reasonable prices. Felix Magazine has compiled a handy guide to our favourite street food bites.

Mother Clucker

street foodWith several locations across London including Camden Market, Ely’s Yard, West India Quay and Model Market, Mother Cluck might just serve the capital’s best fried chicken.

It has a slim menu of four chicken dishes. The “combo” is three chicken strips with Cajun fries and a drink for £9, the “mini meal” for £6.30 is two strips of chicken and half a portion of chips and a drink, the “strips” is three tea brined buttermilk chicken strips.

If you’re feeling more adventurous there is the “cluckwich” which is fried chicken thigh with pickled pepper, lettuce and hot sauce on Texas Toast.

Mother Clucker’s fries are simply skinny chips tossed in Cajun spices, for £3. It’s a simple menu full of flavour.

In November Mother Clucker can be found at Portobello Market on Sundays from 9am to 6pm and at the Fleet Xmas Market on the 29th. From November 17 to December 23 it will be at the Tate Modern Christmas market every day but check the website to confirm the schedule.

The Grilling Greek

street foodOne of London’s most famous street food businesses serves authentic Greek dishes at decent prices from a blue and white van.

The Grilling Greek offers traditional souvlaki (grilled meat and vegetables) with a choice of pork, chicken or halloumi in a grilled pitta with tomatoes, red onion and homemade tzatziki served alongside hand-cut triple-cooked chips topped with oregano and the option of crumbled feta.

The Grilling Greek also has a selection of Greek sides such as super-smooth hummus topped with olive oil and chickpeas. The Grilling Greek van can be found every day at Camden Lock Market and at different Kerb locations across London.

The Gyoza Guys

street foodThe Gyoza Guys offer a slice of China on the streets of London, serving up traditional dumplings, udon noodles and salad. Gyozas come in a serving of five and are little pockets of  goodness with fillings such as pork belly and chive, chicken, cabbage and corn, prawn, shrimp and crab and a veggie option of shiitake mushroom, spinach and water chestnut.

Dumplings are served with various sauces and can come with a side of udon noodles which are simply tossed in soy sauce and sesame oil, or a side salad of Japanese seaweed salad served with tahini, wasabi and maple syrup. The Gyoza Guys can be found at Pitch in Stratford from Wednesday to Friday from 5pm until late and on weekends from noon. They are also at KERB in West India Quay on Tuesday, London Bridge on Wednesday and Kings Cross on Thursday, all from noon to 2pm. Other sites are Maltby Street Market on weekends and Street Feast’s Model Market in Lewisham on Friday and Saturday evenings.

You doughnut
