Food: Burger Surprises of London

Everybody loves burgers. Many of us would do a deal with the Devil for a huge portion of tender beef combined with melted cheese, vegetables and ketchup.  But sometimes we all get tired of classics and even the beloved traditional burger can become a little boring. Luckily, London offers a wide range of unusual burgers to spice up your food life.

Aged Cheeseburger Taco

burgerPedants might argue that this treat dished up by Temper cannot really be called a cheeseburger.

As you can guess from the name, it is a mixture of a cheeseburger and a taco and uses corn tacos instead of buns and small bites instead of huge portions.

The fresh minced beef (aged up to 78 days) is complemented by chipotle sour cream and house green sauce, provolone cheese and red onion. Dedicated fans of unusual burgers should visit as soon as possible.

Veggie Burger

burgerEven vegans and healthy types sometimes want to indulge in a bite of burger. And now they can.

The patty of a Veggie Burger at Advisory in Hackney is made of sweet potato, halloumi and avocado and comes with whole sunflower seeds, making it crunchy. Vegans should ask for a Veggie without halloumi. It just might be the healthiest burger on Earth.

Foghorn Leghorn

burgerChicken is always a popular option for those who are not big on red meat.

Foghorn Leghorn from the Street Kitchen mobile vans is made with a slow-cooked chicken leg combined with smoky bacon, red onion, lettuce, cheesy mayo and toasted brioche bun.

Apple and mint coleslaw brings new flavours to the meal, making it anything but a simple chicken offering.

The Cliff

burgerBurger & Beyond has gourmet hand-pressed burgers made with beef aged for up to 90 days.

Ageing and butchering meat on their own farm, the Burger & Beyond team do their cooking in a vintage orange van.

The Cliff is one of three burgers on the B&B menu. Put together chuck and brisket aged on the bone, a fresh bun, Monterey Jack cheese, pancetta bacon and Tarragon mayo and you don’t need much more to complete your meal.

You can find the B&B crew in Dinerama, Shoreditch from Wednesday to Saturday or any day in Camden Market.

Roast Burger

burgerThe rather upmarket Roast Restaurant in Borough Market offers a mixture of a roast and a burger – perfect for the diner who struggles to make a choice.

Instead of one big meat patty, the Roast Burger is a slice of 48-day dry aged sirloin beef packed with carrot piccalilli, pickled red cabbage and melted ale & mustard cheddar.

It is served in a potato & rosemary bun and accompanied by Yorkshire pudding and gravy. It is not cheap, at £26.50, but this is a seriously awesome burger.
