Food: London’s Classiest Chinese Takeaway

A Chinese meal can be either fantastic or a sad and gloopy disappointment. The same applies to takeaway, which can be a first-class feast or cheap, dour and pumped full of MSG.

Felix Magazine has turned its back on the cheap and nasty takeaways and sought out some of the best Chinese restaurants in London that offer take-away, so now you have some great options for dining at home without lowering your standards.

The Good Earth

Whether you want to get dressed up and venture into Knightsbridge for a swanky meal or just snuggle up on the sofa in front of the TV, The Good Earth is a good bet.

takeawayWith restaurants in Knightsbridge (left), Wandsworth Common and Mill Hill and takeaway or delivery locations in Wimbledon, West Hampstead, Richmond and Battersea, The Good Earth covers most of London.

It has a lighter take on Chinese classics and uses responsibly-sourced meat and fish, putting it in a different class from your standard Chinese takeaway restaurants.

takeaway Its starter of fresh Scottish lobster with spring onions and ginger on a bed of noodles is a treat, as are the Dragon’s Whisker Prawns (left) and chicken and chive dumplings which are lighter and more aromatic than those you will find in the great majority of Chinese restaurants.

The Good Earth’s main menu includes monkfish and broccoli, chicken with Thai Basil and chillies and Thai green curry.

Ping Pong

Ping Pong offers a  broad Chinese menu with a pinch of fun. With eight restaurants all over London – Southbank, Covent Garden and Soho to name a few – it is slowly taking over the capital.takeaway

Ping Pong offers both delivery and collection from any of its eight restaurants with a menu offering fresh food, wonderful colours and delicate Chinese flavours.

The crispy duck bao (left) with steamed buns, spring onions, cucumber and hoi sin sauce is a combination of classic Chinese flavours but refined and more delicious than typical duck pancakes, which can be bone-dry when delivered by most take-away services.

takeawaySimilarly, the unicorn noodle salad (left) with rocket, almonds, cashew nuts and chicken embodies the flavours you’d expect from a Chinese dish but is much lighter and fresher. Ping Pong is one to remember if you’re looking for great food at a reasonable price.

Locations: St Katherine Docks, Southbank, Bow Bell House, Covent Garden, Soho, Wembley, Shepherds Bush, St Christopher’s Place

Bar Shu

This is one of the best Sichuan restaurants in London.

takeawayDan Dan noodles (left) and other Chengdu street snacks are excellent choices for those feeling tentative but the brave should go for the fragrant fish.

It is a dish guaranteed to test the limits of the Scoville scale, a century-old system for measuring the heat of spicy foods, which oddly enough is reported in Scoville Heat Units, or SHU. The restaurant’s name is actually an abbreviation of the two ancient kingdoms that once existed in the Sichuan basin.

takeawayThe fragrant chicken in a pile of chillies, priced at £22.90, (left) is another Chongqing specialty that is explosively hot and memorable. Bar Shu works with Deliveroo and several other delivery services.

Address: 28 Frith Street, Soho, London W1D 5LF  Tel: 0207 287 8822

Firecracker

Located moments from Big Ben and across the River Thames, Firecracker was crowned the UK’s best Chinese takeaway in 2015. It offers restaurant dining, takeaway and delivery.

Firecracker has an extensive menu featuring everyone’s favourite Chinese small plates of crispy duck salad, shrimp tempura and ribs, to name a few. It also offers interesting flavours that are not found on your typical corner Chinese restaurant, such as ostrich with ginger and spring onions.

Other options run from beef in black bean sauce to garlic and ginger prawns and half and quarter roasted duck.

The seafood menu includes scallops and asparagus, lobster with ginger and spring onions and lightly fried seabass with a hot chilli sauce. Firecracker offers a great dim sum dumpling menu (above) of vegetarian, meat and seafood dumplings, steamed buns and gyoza. Rice combinations and noodles accompany Firecracker’s mains and it has a broad alcohol menu for both dining in and takeaway/ delivery.
