Kylian Mbappe Lottin’s first ever Champions League goal gave Monaco the lead against Man City in their round of 16 clash in February and his performance across the two games made everyone in Europe aware of the 18-year-old.
With 15 goals in 29 appearances this campaign he helped Monaco win the French Ligue 1 and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. The youngster has quickly gone from unknown to unstoppable.
Where next?
Mbappe is now wanted by all of Europe’s elite clubs but he has risen to stardom so rapidly that his next move could turn him into a legend or leave him as a one-season wonder. The problem for Mbappe is that Monaco is unlikely to repeat last season’s success, meaning his value will probably decrease.
A move this summer would mean a lot of money for him and his current club, no doubt making him the most expensive teenager in football. It is estimated that he would cost around £60m, despite rumours that his buy-out clause is closer to £100m and would rule out most of the possible suitors.
If I was Mbappe, I wouldn’t risk a move to Real Madrid as the relentless Galacticos fans would happily make him the scapegoat if things don’t go to plan. Bayern Munich is another option for the French striker but first-team football would be limited with Robert Lewandowski nowhere near ready to hang up his boots.
That leaves him either Manchester United or Manchester City as the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea wouldn’t be able to afford his price tag or wages.
United or Man City really is a flip of a coin. Pep Guardiola could turn him into a dynamic forward and learning from Sergio Aguero could push Mbappe to the next level but the pressure to deliver titles under Guardiola would be extremely high.
On the other side of Manchester, Jose Mourinho might not turn the France striker into a star but he could help to manage the pressure around him.
The problem at Old Trafford is that the current style of play under Mourinho wouldn’t suit him. The best strategy would really be to stay at Monaco if it could promise a title challenge next season but that is highly unlikely with several other stars leaving the club.
What can we expect?
If the rumours are correct that Real Madrid is truly interested then Mbappe will more than likely be playing under Zinedine Zidane next season, which I believe will be the worst move possible. The pressure playing alongside (or dare I say under) Cristiano Ronaldo and in front of unforgiving fans will prove too much and he would probably move back to France after a couple of seasons. However, if Madrid isn’t as keen as the newspapers suggest then a move to Man City is extremely likely with Guardiola not 100% sold on Aguero.
A partnership of Gabriel Jesus and Mbappe would torment the best defenders in the Premier League, pushing City closer to the league title and perhaps even a Champions League trophy. After a few seasons dominating the Premier League Mbappe could finally make a move to Real Madrid, and at that stage his price tag would be more like £120m. Think carefully, kid, think carefully.
