What’s On TV: The Leading Redheads of TV Drama

Good drama needs a strong mix of script, cast and location.  If the cast includes some gorgeous and feisty redheads, that’s even better. Here are four of our favourites.

Verity Bridges (Naimh Walsh): Jamestown (Sky1)

redheadsSeventeenth Century America was a brutal environment.  Jamestown was a settlement in Virginia populated by an all-male group of pioneers.  They have built their town and in 1619 are ready to bring out women to be their wives.  Verity is promised to publican Meredith Rutter and she launches herself into life as his wife.

We have had two episodes so far and already she has been accused of witchcraft and placed a curse on the town marshall.  She doesn’t care who she upsets but when they include the priest and the Virginia Company secretary things become difficult.

With lovable bawdiness and a twinkle in her eye at all times, Verity does everything with a swish of her gorgeous red hair.

Demelza Poldark (Eleanor Tomlinson): Poldark (BBC)

redheadsKitchen hand turned lady of the manor, Demelza has proved herself to be every inch the strong, determined redhead.  Plucked from a Cornish kitchen by the ruggedly handsome Ross Poldark, she has slowly but surely wormed her way into the affections of us all.

She showed her steely side after her husband’s dalliance with Elizabeth, his childhood sweetheart. Demelza exploded into action as the woman scorned and the life of Mr Poldark was made very uncomfortable indeed.

She is every inch the strong, gutsy redhead.  Poldark returns later this year, when we will see how life develops for Demelza.

Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner): Game of Thrones (Sky)

redheadsSpirited women are a staple in GoT and Sansa has quietly gone about her business through Series 1-6.

The daughter of Warden of the North Ned Stark, she has trodden a dangerous path. Briefly married to Tyrion Lannister, she was also engaged to his brother Joffrey, a position that placed her in huge peril.

Sansa uses all her feminine wiles to escape the clutches of the Lannisters but again finds herself in jeopardy, as her companion Petyr Baelish declares his love for her. Eventually she finds her way back to the North where she is wed to the horrendously brutal Ramsay Bolton. He ends up being killed by his own dogs, as Sansa watches on.

As we approach Series 7, Sansa is a key element in the battle for the Iron Throne, teaming up with Jon Snow in a potent partnership.

Ygritte (Rose Leslie): Game of Thrones (Sky)

redheadsWe can’t talk about redheads and Game of Thrones without mentioning Ygritte.  This spectacular beauty, full of anger, love and cunning, is a Wildling.

Her red hair is seen as a sign of luck but this seemed to have deserted her when she was captured by Jon Snow. After escaping she turns the tables and eventually seduces Snow. Their relationship is tempestuous, with the conflicting interests of Snow and the Wildlings causing real struggles, both physical and emotional.

Despite declaring her love for Jon she shoots him at one stage but they come together again before Ygritte dies in Snow’s arms, having being shot in the back.

Got to love the wonderful redheads.
