We now know that the coffee cups we’ve been using aren’t exactly eco-friendly. So what can be done about them? They’re an environmental horror hiding in plain sight and the new campaign to spread a few special bins around the Square Mile of London is not going to solve the problem for good. We all need to do what we can and with the biggest coffee brands offering a discount to customers who bring in reusable cups there’s never been a better time to invest. Take a look at these eco-cups that might help to save the planet and will certainly save your pennies.
The Easy Carry Option
One of the major drawbacks of having your own travel mug is space. We already have to fit laptops, iPads, phones, chargers, tampons, stationery, snacks, headphones, work, books and kindles into our bags. Trying to squash a tall cappuccino cup in there as well is a step too far.
Thankfully some clever souls have found a simple solution. Collapsible cups are not new but ones that don’t leak are. There are now two on the market getting consistently great reviews. Stojo is our favourite; the only problem is they’re a US-born Kickstarter campaign so they have to be shipped from the States. It’s pricey: a $15 cup hikes up to $28 with UK shipping (around £22). Still, if you’re a caffeine addict you’ll soon make that back in savings and moral high-ground.
Alternatively you can opt for the Jerrybox version, which can be found on Amazon for a reasonable £12.99. Both cups fold down into much more manageable sizes for bags, briefcases and even pockets: you can take them wherever you go and fill up without fear of damaging the environment.
Pick up your Stojo here or the Jerrybox at Amazon.
The Clean Car Cup
If your car has survived C-charges and T-charges we’re guessing it’s greener than most. Why not strengthen it’s environmentally-friendly stance with a live-in travel mug?
Chances are that when you go shopping you forget to take one of the 700 plastic bags you’ve hoarded, so you’re not going to remember to take a thermos every time you get in the car. You’re better off investing in a travel mug that can live in your cup holder, ready for action. We like the Eden Project’s ecoffee bamboo mug. Sadly most Londoners don’t get much exposure to the world’s fastest growing plant. Bamboo is green as can be, cheap, sustainably sourced and lighter than ceramic options, so it won’t ruin any temperamental pop-out cup holders. It’s also ideal if you’re somewhat forgetful: bamboo is a naturally sterile material that neutralises bacteria left on its surface after 24 hours. Perfect for those times you leave it in the car uncleaned.
They are £7.50 a pop with £5.75 delivery but the Eden Project has a three-for-two option, so snap up some of the beautiful designs and share the green love with a couple of friends. Pick them up here.
The Office Bit-of-Class Glass
The less plastic we use, the better for the environment. If bamboo isn’t your bag, give the stylish glass JOCO cup a go. It’s a cute and colourful little cup that is safe for microwaves and dishwashers and won’t leave a taste of plastic in your mouth. The glass itself is relatively small, making it the ideal size for office coffee machines or flat whites at your favourite independent.
You can be a clean, green role model for your colleagues with your classy JOCO glass, while avoiding the dreaded plastic-lined paper cups. It’s easy to wash, easy to use and comes in two sizes depending on your caffeine needs. We can’t lie, they are expensive but they’re worth the investment – you simply can’t put a price on the joy of spending less at Starbucks.
Pick up your JOCO cup here.
If one of these isn’t your cup of tea (or coffee, hot chocolate, chai latte) there are plenty of others on the market. For the price of a lunch out in London, you can do yourself and the planet some good. You’ll also make back the money just by buying your usual drinks: it’s a no-brainer. So don’t just close the tab and carry on like this doesn’t affect you: order one today and do the whole world a favour.
