Time To Put An End To The Europa League?

After experiencing one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the beautiful game we call football between Barcelona and PSG; a day later you kick back to watch some more football, apparently the next step down from UEFA Champions League is Europa League?

europaI sit down, switch the TV on and see a grass pitch that looks like a beach, featuring the 6th worst team in the most overrated league in the world versus a bunch of farmers. Excuse me if I sound rude but why would I watch this instead of women’s beach volleyball? Aside from that, if you haven’t watched any of the game, don’t bother, it was like watching head tennis between a bunch of 5 year old kids in a park on a sunny day on Blackpool beach. Absolutely atrocious.

Last year, the Europa League produced some magic, Dortmund, Liverpool, Sevilla, Napoli and United were all among the names in the hat in the last 16. But that was the first time in years that the Europa League delivered some magic and even then it seemed a long step down from the Champions League.

The biggest problem with the Europa League is that it is on a Thursday. Thursday is the new Friday, if I sit down to watch football, I want to be entertained and even more so if the standard of players suggests Fellaini is the best player on the pitch then I need to see goals, 6-3’s, 5-2’s and so on. Instead we’re seeing 1-1s and 2-1s. It is embarrassing, I feel the need to switch the channel when someone walks in, I don’t want people catching me watching Sunday League football on a Thursday, it’s not politically correct.

All jokes aside, it’s great to give lower teams a chance, similar to the FA Cup but playing on a Thursday, travelling crazy amount of miles and pitting terrible teams against each other really isn’t the way forward for any competition. What do we love about the Champions League? The huge ties, the big games, the entertainment. Nobody watches Schalke vs Monchengladbach on a weekend so why would they watch it on a weekday? It’s 9th against 13th in the Bundesliga. You have to improve the draws, the small teams play the small teams and the big play the big, that way you get more eyes on the games and the games are better too until maybe the last 8 it stays that way. Otherwise, I’d rather actually socialise on a Thursday and pretend I care about my mates week than pretend I care about sandy pitches and long ball football.

Put an end to Europa League Thursday night football or put a start to a well-seeded and almost fixed competition that gives the fans what they want – entertainment.
