There is no doubt about it.
We have all heard about Wednesday 8th March. Barcelona’s epic rise from what seemed to be the dead Barcelona were magnificent, they overturned all kinds of odds, they produced the unthinkable, they delivered the greatest comeback in the history of football. But, let’s stop right there.
There is absolutely no way, no inch of an excuse, no hiding corner for the PSG players. What they showed in those 90 minutes is nothing short of disgusting. Even if PSG were playing Sutton United on Wednesday, they would have lost that match too!
It’s absolutely ridiculous that Unai Emery is facing the prospect of a sacking because of the PSG players. Every one of the PSG players should be given the sacking. Under no circumstances should a team featuring Angel Di Maria, Cavani, Verrati be conceding 3 goals at the end of a game to lose Champions League qualification.
In fact, it wasn’t even those last 6 minutes. It was an appalling match from PSG. The full 90 minutes was an atrocious performance, PSG did not turn up. Maybe the psychological edge of a 4-0 first leg win was playing on their minds, but to concede 6 goals at Champions League level with the quality of PSG, it is frankly embarrassing. They have left a sad, dark mark in their own history books and more so put an end to a potential great story with Unai.
The first half played into Barcelona’s hands, they got a very lucky goal and penalty decision in their favour. Lady luck was with them. But, in a game where Lionel Messi and Suarez were fairly quiet, the second half was an atrocious showing. Especially, when you consider the fact that Cavani had given them the perfect goal to set-up a comfortable 3-1 win.
However, to concede 3 goals in the space of 6 minutes is unforgiveable. There are big characters in that squad that should be ashamed of the performance.
As usual though, the manager will take the slack. But, what more can a manager do? He has set out the stall, set out the players with a clear objective. The players agreed to this objective and should have carried out. The manager is powerless on the sidelines, he can only bark instructions in the hope that one may be carried out successfully. So, why should he get the blame? Why should the players not be hound upon by the pack of chasing wolfs(fans)?
It’s the sad reality of football today. You can’t blame the players, you can’t touch the players, they are literally living the life. The manager has to answer the questions, get questioned about his future and live with his name attached to the most embarrassing defeat of all time. It will forever be remembered, Unai Emery’s PSG were defeated 6-1 in the biggest football comeback of all-time.
The 11 players will barely get a mention and get away with murder instead. But could this open a door for the biggest loser to join the softest PL club? You know who we’re talking about…
