Four Easy Style Lessons From Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp regularly brings a touch of celebrity style to London that is as at home here as in his home of Los Angeles. The great thing about Depp’s style is it has been fairly consistent for years, meaning it hasn’t let him down yet and we can see the common themes. It is a mix of quirky rockstar and dandy gentleman and rarely looks out of place. Luckily for us, his iconic look can be broken down into just four pillars to help us mere mortals.

Tailoring

Johnny Depp rocks suits. Despite his flamboyant appearance he certainly appreciates the sharp lines of classic tailoring with plenty of early 20th century style cuts. Bespoke tailor Chris Kerr demonstrates in his client list Depp walking a red carpet in a voluminously cut royal blue double-breasted suit. He even tops off the twenties look with spats. Even in his dressd down look with rolled sleaves to show his leather cuff he wears a simple matching waistcoat and trousers with plain white shirt.

The rules? You can look great in a suit without looking formal. Accesorise your neck with pendants rather than a tie. Look for suits with character rather than M&S work suits.

Jewellery

Ever seen Johnny Depp without his rings? He wears a silver skull made by C’est Magnifique, who ceased trading in 2014. He shares the design with friends Iggy Pop and Jim Jarmusch who got the three together. Part of the C’est Magnifique legacy lives on through Sterling Assault, who continue this design. He also wears a replica 17th century gold ring from Pirates of the Caribbean. Then of course there is the array of pendants and beads that vary in cost and significance. What does this mean for you? Don’t be afraid to ornament yourself with little treasures. Have a look at London’s rock’n’roll jewellers Crazy Pig and the famous Great Frog.

As for earrings, he often has an array of precious metal feathers. Lately he has gone for four safety pins- which are likely high end jewellery versions like Loren Stewart’s 14k gold designs.

The rules? We’re not all Johnny Depp. In modern times of metrosexuality a man can be free to express himself with earrings and necklaces. Just make sure it is still ‘you’ that you are expressing.

Hats

Johnny Depp wears light coloured fedoras. Not the narrow-brimmed trilby, but the classic of menswear. Anyone can wear this style but it is very forgiving to long hair.

An investment in a quality hat can go a long way. Don’t worry about spending a few hundred on a high end Borsalino but equally don’t think you’re going to stand out spending a tenner in Camden market. Find what suits you and rock it.

Facial Hair

The entertaining flop ‘Mortdecai’ focussed heavily on Depp’s character having grown a moustache his wife, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, could not admire. Though Depp rarely sports such a refined handlebar it remians that he regularly demonstrates well groomed facial hair. Fortunately, his is the kind of soft wispiness that many of can grow.

The rules? Keep everything around your chosen growth clean shaven. While he doesn’t trim meticulously a kempt appearance can be maintained with scissors, rather than the uniform length of a trimmer.
