As much as Portobello Road is a tourist destination, it’s actually a pretty cool place to wander around, watch people and find some great things to buy. There’s quite a lot there to pick through, from antiques and vintage accessories through to fresh food and the occasional halal butcher.
You’re also close to Notting Hill which has no shortage of fine shopping, eating and places to hang out and watch the people pass by. There’s a Banksy at the end you should ask around to locate.
Westbourne Grove – antiques stalls between Portobello Road and Kensington Park Road.
Portobello Green – under the Westway on Portobello Road, this has more new fashion.
The market is packed with stalls from Westbourne Grove all the way up to and along Golborne Road, and across under the Westway out to Ladbroke Grove. Come early to discover the best finds and avoid the crowds!
Sunday is more like vintage and bric-a-brac day, with the street market from Portobello to Golborne Roads.
Dolly Diamond
Vintage fashion store at 51 Pembridge Road, ‘stylist to the stars’ Dolly Diamond is a high-end vintage clothing and accessories store for women and men mostly covering the 1920s to 1980s. Always keen to let shoppers know that what can’t be seen in the store can always be found somewhere, especially for brides.
Decadent Vintage
Mother, daughter stall mostly under the Westway, 1920s to 1980s frocks and all things true to the name ‘decadent’.
Portwine Arcade
Right near the Portobello Star pub is this small arcade with an abundance of wonderful stores.
Westbourne/Portobello Road Market – Portobello Road
A long road starting at Notting Hill Gate through to Westbourne Park Road, features food and young clothes stalls.
Military Stall Under the Westway, you’ll find war jackets, boots and all sort of wartime memorabilia.
The Merchant, Ledbury Road
Vintage and second-hand clothes are all the rage at The Merchant, a local and London favourite. Shoppers swish through the racks in search of their favourite brands at super crazy prices.
Books for Cooks, 4 Blenheim Crescent
A famous shop with wall-to-wall cooking books to keep all cooks wide-eyed, with so many choices and names they haven’t come across. Couches let you hang around and flip through the pages. Books for Cooks also features a fantastic café out the back and a demo kitchen where they put many of the books through their paces.
Honest Jon’s Records, 278 Portobello Road
A
n old-school record store which stocks eclectic blues, dance, soul, reggae and global music on vinyl and CD, with online sales of records, memorabilia and music merchandise. Operating since 1974, the shop is owned and run by Mark Ainley and Alan Scholefield, who took over from one of the original proprietors, “Honest” Jon Clare.
Cowshed, 119 Portland Road
‘Honest, Natural and Luxurious Bath and Body’ products from Cowshed, which first appeared at Babington House spa and resort and now can be found all over the world, including Soho House and others. Shop their luxury line of lotions and potions to sensuate your senses with scents you’ll umm and ahh over.
