If you’re a true romantic, one fairytale destination on your bucket list should be the Tunnel of Love in Klevan, Ukraine. It’s obviously popular with couples, but anyone can enjoy the marvellous leafy scenery the tunnel of love has to offer.
What is this Tunnel of Love?
Possibly one of the most romantic spots on the planet, this 5km route is actually a section of industrial railway line through the forest near the village of Klevan, in the Ukraine, where the trees have grown to envelop the space created by the passage of the train several times a day.
There is a popular local belief that if lovers are dedicated and faithful to each other, and can travel through the entire length of the ‘tunnel’ while holding each other’s hands, all their wishes and dreams will come true.
How was it formed?
In Soviet days, the railway line was used to transport logged timber to a staging area in the forest, surrounded by huge trees to conceal the workshop facility from enemy spies. The train would pass under the arches created by the branches three times a day, carrying wood to the fibreboard factory. Over the years, the trees grew ever more snugly around and across the track, eventually creating the ‘tunnel’.
The tunnel is in its full glory and at its most lush during summer and spring, when the foliage is at its most luxuriant. However, the autumn colours of red, green and yellow are spectacular, while the snowy winter creates a breathtaking fairytale atmosphere. Whenever you visit, it is like stepping into a scene from a movie.
Getting there from London?
The Klevan Tunnel of Love is located in the west of Ukraine. Take a connecting flight from the UK to Kiev. Klevan is about 400km from Kiev, which takes about five hours by car. Gas stations, cafes and toilets are in good supply.
You can catch the train or bus to Kovel, from which it is about 7km from Klevan. Day tours by train or bus are also organised by the tour operators from Kiev.
