Film Review – Passengers

Starring two of Hollywood’s current favourites, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, I expected everyone to be rushing to the box office to buy tickets however the buzz for this film was relatively quiet. When I saw this film, I really enjoyed it, however it also slightly surprised me.

passengersBefore seeing ‘Passengers’, the publicity lead me to believe that this was a sci-fi mystery with a sprinkle of romance, but it was quite the opposite. This film is a love story about two people who only have each other for company, it has a dash of mystery to create excitement, and has a sci-fi background. Basically, writer Aurora Lane (Lawrence) and mechanic Jim Preston (Pratt) are Jack and Rose and their ‘Titanic’ is a spaceship. In general, the films plot was unexpected but entertaining.

What also fascinated me about ‘Passengers’ was how realistic the sci-fi element was. There are some sci-fi films which have concepts which you know would never occur in real life or they would happen two hundred years from now, but ‘Passengers’ has cleverly moulded a concept that could even be a solution in the relatively near future. In fifty years, We could be at risk to over-population and one of the ways we can solve this is by moving to other planets. Since many planets are years away from Earth, we’d have to go into ‘hibernation’ to prevent us from ageing. Tyldum goes beyond that concept by setting it at a time when it’s considered ‘normal’  to move to another planet and the ‘planet-moving’ industry is one of the most successful in the world.

Generally, Passengers was a good movie. The acting was not ‘Oscar worthy’ but it was laudable, the special effects were fantastic, and this was the most comfortable-looking space ship I’ve ever seen in a movie! Although there are no more ‘Passengers’ posters scattered around London, you can still view this film in certain cinemas so if you have not seen it, don’t give up hope.
